Hi Kristy, it’s great to see you again! Congratulations on your new book! What’s it about?
Thank you so much for having me! The new book is called the Wildly STRATEGIC Compliance Officer Workbook, and the goal of the book is to transform compliance professionals from fire-fighters into in-demand business assets by using planning and strategy secrets.
What inspired you to write this book?
When I started my first day as a Chief Compliance Officer, I remember feeling panicked. I wasn’t sure how to prioritize risks or my projects, or how to communicate my value to the Board. I developed the worksheets, exercises and templates in the book during my time as a CCO. Last year when I launched Spark Compliance Consulting, I realized that there were many highly accomplished compliance officers who struggled mightily with strategy and planning. They were so busy fighting fires that they couldn’t seem to focus on getting other projects done. I knew there was a better way, so I decided to write a book about it.
Interesting! Why did you decide to go with a workbook format?
In my consulting practice, I began offering worksheets and quizzes to help compliance officers to prioritize risk. I realized that writing about strategy wasn’t as helpful as enabling others to define their own risks, make their three-year plan, create their annual goals etc. The workbook format uses expert advice, exercises, quizzes and examples, so by the end of the workbook, the compliance professional has assets he or she can use with the C-suite or Board.
It seems like every business would be different. How can one book work for say, a financial services firm and someone working in export/import control at a defense contractor?
Good question! When I was writing the book, I decided to survey compliance professionals asking for their number one question regarding planning and strategy. I wasn’t surprised when three key themes emerged from more than 60% of the respondents. The top three questions were:
- Where do I start when designing or updating the compliance program?
- How do I prioritize when there are so many issues, needs and expectations?
- How do I get buy-in from the C-Suite, Board and managers for my program?
Strategy is about applying tools and critical thinking to your specific business. The workbook works for everyone because it lets you apply your business situation to the tools so you can come up with solutions.
Fantastic. Where and when is the book on sale?
The book is currently available here at Amazon.com world-wide and will be in bookstores. There’s also a fantastic online course that I’ve created, and certification which will come available on May 9th. You can find out more at www.WildlyStrategicWorkbook.com, or at www.ComplianceKristy.com.
